Dynamics
One of the problems with a coerced or mandated entry into a treatment program for alcohol issues is the potential that the program will make the problem worse. One negative by product is that the programs are not individually tailored and can cause resistance to treatment making the individual less aware of the “real” problem.
The solution is for a person needing to find a treatment program should have an adequate initial evaluation and diagnosis by a competent drug and alcohol treatment facility. A competent facility, respected by the Court system, will be able to fashion a program that fits your situation.
A good evaluation and diagnosis is a good thing for you personally. There are major differences between an individual who misuses alcohol occasionally and the extreme case of alcohol dependence.
Definitions have been developed which outline the different types of situations involving alcohol use and alcohol problems. They are as follows:
1) Appropriate: Alcohol is used responsibly
and safely
2) Misuse: Excessive alcohol consumption
within what can be considered a normal
behavior pattern.
3) Abuse: Consumption of alcohol to obtain a
specific effect( ie:escaping life’s problems.)
4) Habituated: Continued alcohol after the initial
reason for social drinking has resolved. Your
not quite “dependent” on alcohol but you are
drinking way too frequently.
5) Dependence: The need to continue drinking
to prevent the appearance of withdrawal
symptoms.
For you to benefit from treatment and for the Court to see you benefit it is critical for you to get an appropriate evaluation so that the correct treatment program can be imposed without setting you back and making the situation worse.
